ABOUT THE BNAV PROGRAM: BNAV is targeted for youth ages 13-19 years old to publicly perform their own written works. We provide a stage that empowers youth across the state to speak out and educate others about any number of topics in a voice that their peers can relate to. These youth work collaboratively to make positive differences in their communities through trainings, workshops, event performances, leadership opportunities and mentoring. They also are given the chance to compete in competitive slam poetry competitions in and out of the state of Alaska. BNAV began in 2010 and is an extension of the Diff3r3nt by D3sign program that was founded in 2004. Since the BNAV program began we have started the first Alaskan youth slam poetry team to compete at BNV Nationals which moves across the lower 48, assisted with workshops as a part of the 2012 COYA convention, won the 2012 Spirit of Youth Award for Fine Arts, worked on video documentary to provide education on domestic violence, taught writing workshops and hosted poetry slams in some of the Anchorage and Valley schools. In addition our coaches have been invited to teach at MYC and in some of the youth residential treatment centers.
Donations made to BNAV aide in the much-needed funds for our training/workshop programs within our state as well as team entry fees/travel/meal expenses to take a team of 9 to compete in Brave New Voices National Competition, which this year will be held in Chicago, IL in July 2013. Brave New Voices host an annual festival that moves throughout the lower 48 states. This national competition is represented by 80 teams, roughly 850 youth throughout the U.S. It is a week long festival where these youth will work amongst their peers in workshops/performances with industry professionals. They have daily activities setup for them on the college campus that is hosting from early morning until late at night. They are submerged in what they love and will enjoy opportunities that may not otherwise be afforded them. This is the 16th year of this national festival and only the third year that Alaska will be represented. Donations received will help fund the BNAV program projects within the state of Alaska and its competitive travel outside.
